In the Beginning…

It was a wild and woolly morning, gathered around the Aga with cups of tea in hand, listening to the wind howling across the surrounding moors. Studio designer Chris Walls, from Level Acoustic Design, had just flown up to Yorkshire from ‘down south’ to inspect the barn we intended to convert into a cutting-edge recording studio – what a day to start!

First impressions are always crucial, so naturally, it had to be fully soundproofed against the elements. Our aspiration was to cater for a diverse range of artists by creating a high-tech yet aesthetically gorgeous creative retreat in the heart of our wonderful North York Moors National Park.

Recognising the project's ‘phenomenal potential’, Chris committed to designing something unique: a contemporary and comfortable complex that integrated versatile technology and acoustics to sustain a broad spectrum of musical genres. The task was ambitious, but we all believed in the vision. Equally important was keeping our carbon footprint low, and thus began a significant retrofit in March 2020 (pandemic timing, you could say, was interesting).

Once the studio's structure and design were finalised, we embarked on transforming it into a top-of-the-line facility, installing a brand-new SSL ORIGIN 32 mixing desk, ATC speakers, a Dante System connecting the adjacent three farm cottages, soundless air change and temperature control, just for starters… and no effort was spared in furnishing this light-filled space.

Fast forward two years, and we have completely revamped the interior of the old barn, while leaving the exterior walls untouched. As you approach, you would be unaware of the gem that lies within – the incredible transformation that is now Ayriel Studios, a veritable Tardis!
