There’s a definite buzz in the air this month – and no, it’s not just the bees (though they do play an unexpectedly starring role in this story...).
We’re reaching the crescendo of Beacon for the Arts, a bold new festival that’s been lighting up the North York Moors throughout April. A month-long celebration of creativity in all its colourful forms, Beacon is already establishing itself as a standout gem in the region’s cultural landscape. Think music, visual art, poetry, and performance – all woven together across moorland, coast and dale in a joyous tapestry of artistic expression.
This year’s edition invited singer-songwriter John Drakes, whose earthy lyricism and soul-stirring melodies have been winning hearts (and playlists) across the country. Drakes recently recorded his debut album at none other than Ayriel Studios, and his festival set will be a kind of homecoming – a chance to share the songs shaped by this landscape, this light, and perhaps... by bees.
Yes, bees. Because when he’s not writing hauntingly beautiful songs, John is also a passionate beekeeper, producing what might just be the best honey in Yorkshire from his hives near Castleton. His bees feast on the local heather – the very same moorland that echoes in his music. Coincidence? Or creative pollination?

Beacon events span barns, forest trails, art studios, windswept churchyards, galleries, and more – an immersive invitation to reimagine both art and place. The festival closes with a flourish: a concert by the internationally acclaimed North York Moors Chamber Music Festival, now in its 17th season, and curated by none other than our own Jamie Walton.
With over 40 partners, including Ayriel Studios, Beacon is gathering serious momentum – and yes, you can feel it: a genuine buzz in the air.
